User talk:Lou Sander
Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:05, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

How do I know what category?
[edit]I have seen your question on the talk page of Multichill. I do not know what he will answer, but may be my experience can be of use for you. I have seen that somebody already made a link to categories for your images, but it may be useful to tell you how I do it if I don’t know a category. There are several approaches depending on the situation. Let’s take as an example your image File:AHPHierarchy02.1.png. If somebody wants to use a diagram as yours for an article he can follow two ways. One is to start with the subject “Analytic Hierarchy” and see what can be found. A search within Wikimedia Commons gives several results. Selecting preferably a category if it is there will give the easiest way to see whether that is a suitable category. In this case Category:Analytic Hierarchy Process If this is not the right category the user can go to a higher level (Decision making) and may be find there what he looks for. An other possibility is to select an image that looks like what he wants and see to which category that image has been linked to.
An other possibility is to start from the type of image and search for “Diagrams” That will lead to the page Specific diagram types. From there on the user can (hopefully) find the image where he is looking for.
If that does not give a good result, an other approach is to start with the Wikipedia. A search for “Analytic Hierarchy Process” on the English Wikipedia gives the page that predominantly has been written by you. The user can see which image is most suitable and find out which category in Commons that image links to. This all may look complicated, but after what experience a user of Wikipedia can find the required info and image that he wants to use in his article/book or whatever. File:Panettone Box.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
